Well educated professionals driving rental boom, study suggests

Far from being made up largely of students or those on low incomes, the current generation of renters tend to be well-educated, intelligent and aspirational young professionals, it has been claimed.

With marketing companies under increasing pressure to carry out efficient campaigns, a new report into UK demographics compiled by Jonathan Burston, sales director at CACI, for the website Precision Marketing has concluded that the boom currently being seen in the rental sector is being drive largely by this group of young professionals.

According to the report, typical renters are "well qualified young people who have finished their studies and started work," with many preferring to spend their disposable income on leisure activities instead of attempting to save up for a deposit on their own place.

"The level of education is above average and jobs tend to be managerial or clerical," the report added.

"Lifestyles are active. Exercise, dance and sport are popular. They frequent coffee shops, and in the evenings go to the theatre, cinema or clubbing. Relaxing moments are spent listening to music or reading."

This industry study comes as new figures from Northern Rock show that mortgage lending has fallen by 49 per cent over the past year alone, supporting the idea that many tenants are shunning the chance to try and buy a place of their own.ADNFCR-1219-ID-18726175-ADNFCR
