Trafford planning eco-town |

| A local authority is reportedly investigating the possibility of building a new 5,000-home eco-town, which could provide additional rental and resale housing within commuting distance of Manchester. The government hopes to create ten new towns in the next few years, all of which will contain low-carbon homes and have power supplied by sustainable energy sources. Interest in the projects has been strong from local authorities across the country, with Trafford council one of the parties to lodge an expression of interest with the government, according to the Manchester Evening News. Council officials believe they have identified an ideal spot for the town on a partially used industrial site owned by oil giant Shell in the village of Carrington, and are now waiting for feedback from the government before deciding whether to press ahead with the plan. If it goes ahead the community would benefit from the regeneration of the area and the increased availability of housing, according to council leader Susan Williams. She added: "If successful it would make a contribution to the region's economic and housing growth." Earlier this year Bridestones Developments was given planning permission to construct a combined cycle gas turbine power station at Carrington. ![]() |
