Tenants to be warned of scams by song

Brighton council are to stage a musical highlighting the perils of door-to-door conmen to young people renting in the city.

Scambuster, which is being put on in collaboration with Sussex Police, is also intended to raise awareness of telephone scams, with young people living away from home for perhaps the first time one of the most vulnerable groups.

Professional actors will play a range of scammed characters, including Sydney who falls victim to a dodgy Tarmac tradesman and Mary, who is tricked into believing she has won the holiday of a lifetime.

"Unfortunately if an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is – this musical will highlight the importance of being on the alert for scams in a fun and entertaining way," said Brian Oxley, council leader and chairman of its Community Safety Forum.

The musical will be staged on September 26th at 10am at the Hove Town Hall, though the show may go on the road at a later date.
