Tenants take home fashion 'extremely seriously' |

| Better regulation of the rental market, increased competition between landlords and the growing sophistication of the UK's student population means that the "grotty digs" of the past have been replaced with chic and well-decorated rented flats and homes, an expert has stated. According to Sharon Dale, property expert at the Yorkshire Post, today's students "take home fashion almost as seriously as what they wear". She reports that growing numbers of young people are adding a personal touch to their rented accommodation, such as fitting mirrors to give a feeling of extra space or buying beanbags or sofa-beds to accessorising with pictures and additional pieces of furniture, with some even going so far as giving their place a new paint job. "It isn't necessary to spend a fortune on making a room look cool," Ms Dale advised. "In fact, mending and making do and miniscule budgets force you to be creative." As well as the more sophisticated tastes of renters, the recent legislation offering better protection for tenants has given many the confidence to make changes to a property, though "the first rule before you hang a picture or paint a wall is to check with the landlord or lettings agency what you can and can't do, " she added. ![]() |
