Tenants more bothered over money than environment

Young professionals looking to rent a flat or home are more likely to be concerned about the property's price and where it is than how energy efficient or green it is, it has been revealed.

Research carried out by the National Landlords Association found that, while there are government-led incentives for UK landlords to make their properties more eco-friendly, they are not doing so as their tenants are not expressing an interest in such a move and many would be unwilling to pay more rent to cover the cost.

Richard Gard, public affairs officer at the professional body said: "Interest from tenants is more 'does the double glazing keep the noise out' and the primary concerns for tenants are still location and how much it costs."

The organisation also believes that only tenant demand will see energy efficiency being improved within the nation's rental properties, which currently account for around ten per cent of all homes.
