Tenants benefiting from friendships with landlords

Growing numbers of renters across the UK are enjoying friendly relations with their landlords, it has been revealed.

In contrast to the popular stereotype of tenants and landlords having an antagonistic and mutually distrusting relationship, a new study has found that one in five tenants regularly socialises with the owner of their property.

Just one in three, however, admitted that they do not get on with their landlord, the study by Alliance & Leicester Mortgages revealed.

Furthermore, 15 per cent of landlords consider their tenants to be their friends while 17 per cent would be happy to buy them a card or present if they moved away from the rented property.

Commenting on the study's findings, Stephen Leonard, director of mortgages at Alliance & Leicester, said: "Contrary to popular belief, landlords can be more friend than foe.

"It's encouraging that so many landlords and tenants enjoy a good relationship, as this can help ensure any issues of dispute relating to the rented property are settled amicably and on good terms.

The study also found that nine per cent of landlords check up on their tenants at least once a fortnight. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18446781-ADNFCR
