Tenants advised to wise up to 'scatty landlords' |
20 2007 |
| Those renting property in the UK have been warned to be on the look-out for landlords keen to take advantage of their lack of knowledge regarding their basic statutory rights. According to a recent report in the Sun, landlords turning up unannounced to inspect a property and the unfair withholding of deposits, are among the top gripes of tenants across the country. In addition, research carried out by the Community Legal Service Direct (CLS) found that one in five of all tenants remain unaware that a landlord is required to give them notice should he wish them to leave a property. The CLS gave six top tips for those renting out a property. Prospective tenants should read and keep a copy of their tenancy agreement and ask their landlord to put their deposit in the new government-led Tenancy Deposit Scheme. Likewise, tenants should ask for an inventory including all the damage to a property before moving in, with photos a useful tool for getting the full deposit back. In addition, tenants should keep records of any correspondence with their landlords and with their neighbours should they have issues with them. ![]() |
