| Tenants and landlords across the UK have been warned of the growing risk of identity fraud. Given that many tenants regularly switch from one rental property to another, many leave themselves in jeopardy by failing to cancel any post they may have been receiving at a previous address. In addition, landlords have been advised to be on the lookout for rogue tenants who move into a property and then use the owner's details to carry out acts of fraud or even apply for a mortgage loan. Rob Tancred, director of Kent estate agency Capital Bromley, stated: "It is vital, when people are having their mail redirected, that they also write to every single person who might send them a letter - even a mail order company they have a zero balance with. "If not, you are exposing yourself to fraud from someone ordering clothes from a catalogue to applying for a loan." Just recently, the Land Registry issued a new set of guidelines concerning cutting back on the risk of identity theft for private sector landlords. ![]() |
