Tenants advised to check hot water systems

Tenants and prospective-tenants across the UK have been advised to ensure that the thermostats in rental properties are safe.

Coming soon after a young baby was killed by a faulty water heating system in the property her family was renting, landlords have also been urged to carry out the vital checks.

During the inquest into the youngster's death, it was argued that millions of homes across the UK could potentially be at risk from a similar accident.

The National Landlords Association has advised its members and tenants of rental properties to be on the lookout for steam or moisture in the roof space, hot water coming out from cold water taps and excessive noise or bubbling from hot water cylinders.

Excessively hot water coming out of hot water taps is also a sign that there could be a fault with the system.

In addition, the Health & Safety Executive has stated that the risk is greatest in properties built between the years 1945 and 1975. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18428756-ADNFCR
