Tenancy deposit scheme a success, figures show |

| The recently-introduced Tenancy Deposit Scheme has been labelled a resounding success by the company appointed by the government to implement it. According to the latest figures released by Tenancy Deposit Solutions (TDS), from October 2007 until now, the number of tenants and tenancies covered by the scheme has risen by around 39 per cent. Almost 600,000 tenants have signed up to the scheme, as have 217,000 landlords, while the total amount being protected now stands at £400 million. Commenting on the statistics, Lawrence Greenberg, chief executive of TDS, said: "This is a huge growth in the number of tenancies and the amount of deposit money covered by our scheme. It reflects a much greater understanding of the legal obligations on landlords. This is in addition to the number of tenancies coming on stream or being renewed. It also reflects the simplicity of the scheme. It requires no effort by landlords or tenants who use lettings agents who are members of the scheme." The scheme was originally launched in April 2007 as a means of better protecting tenants from unscrupulous landlords. ![]() |
