Students set for accommodation boost

Buy-to-let landlords are likely to react to government proposals to create higher education centres across the UK in the next six years, it has been revealed.

With around 10,000 student places being created, demand for rented accommodation in much of the country is likely to increase.

According to the National Landlords Association (NLA), this will result in buy-to-let landlords making more houses available for rent in the chosen locations.

"For those landlords who specialise in students, this is good news," said John Socha, vice chairman of the NLA.

"Any [landlord] who does it at any sort of volume finds that they've got a cycle, unlike everybody else in the lettings market," he added.

However, Mr Socha noted that landlords would need to ensure that the houses they offer students for rent are attractively located.

He said that proximity to either the college or the college bus route is vital, but equally important is access to suitable "entertainments".
