Students driving boom in rental property demand

Students are set to make up the largest proportion of new enquires for rental accommodation over the coming year, investment experts have predicted.

With the government encouraging more and more young people to go to university, increasing numbers are choosing to move away from home and therefore are looking to rent a flat or house either on their own or with fellow renters.

According to the investment management group Assetz, demand for suitable rental accommodation close to universities and colleges is currently outstripping supply, with prospective landlords being encouraged to invest in the sector.

"Student numbers have significantly increased over recent years, yet the majority of university campuses are not able to keep up with demand," said Stuart Law, chief executive of the firm.

"As a result, there is a huge increase in the demand for privately-owned student accommodation, with top student towns offering a near-guaranteed and fast-growing rental income and a constant and growing supply of tenants."

Just last month, student renters were warned that they are at increased risk of falling victim to identity fraud as they are likely to change addresses more frequently and neglect to cancel mail and promotional materials. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18392950-ADNFCR
