Students bringing £1bn to Manchester each year

Manchester students bring more than £1 billion to the local economy each year as they enjoy their time in the UK's second city, new figures have revealed.

With more than 70,000 new students having recently started at Manchester's universities, the consultancy firm AD Little was assigned the task of finding out how much they benefit the local area.

They found that students at the University of Manchester spend £836 million a year while those at the Manchester Metropolitan University contribute £185 million to the local economy.

With rental accommodation for students remaining cheap in many areas of the city, much of the £1 billion goes on shops, bars, cinemas and other leisure services.

"It's great for the city that our students spend so much," Manchester University Student Union's Tom Skinner told the Manchester Evening News.

"There's many aspects of the city that they play a big role in. Not only do they have an impact on businesses and the economy, many also take part in volunteering and other activities, helping the city no end."ADNFCR-1219-ID-18310314-ADNFCR
