Student renters advised to wise up to security |
16 2008 |
| Students have been once again advised of the importance of keeping their rental accommodation secure so as to guard against the risk of burglary. Insurance experts have long pointed out that opportunist thieves often see university premises as easy pickings, and the University of Birmingham was only recently targeted by criminals who got away with £200,000 worth of materials. In particular, students renting ground floor flats have been warned to take extra-special precautions as they are the most likely to be targeted, while making a house extra secure during the long vacation periods is also a wise move. Now the University of Sheffield has launched a new campaign aimed at highlighting this message, entitled 'Like it? Lock it, Keep it'. Inspector Gary West, from the Broomhill Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "Laptops are one of the main targets for burglars. We urge all students to be more safety conscious." Sarah McQueen, President of Sheffield Hallam University Students' Union, added: "Young people are three times more likely to be victims of burglary so it is especially important that our students follow the campaign's simple advice." ![]() |
