Student numbers driving rental sector boom

The UK's booming student numbers have been cited as a major factor behind the ongoing strength of the rental property sector.

According to the BuyAssociation, prospective landlords should look to towns and cities where there are colleges and universities as demand will always be strong.

This in turn means that those looking to rent a property while studying are likely to benefit from competition among landlords and could therefore be able to take advantage of competitive rents.

Paul Collins, property editor of BuyAssocation, stated: "When you have a university town there are always going to be students who are looking for accommodation and there are certainly some really good opportunities to rent out to students."

He added that, as well as a vibrant nightlife, university towns can also be hotbeds of hi-tech and scientific industries, giving graduates good employment opportunities.

Figures released last year by Halifax Estate Agents showed that, on average, property prices in university towns increased by 20 per cent over 2007, highlighting the benefits of renting a property rather than attempting to buy while studying. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18531511-ADNFCR
