Student accommodation in the clouds now looking likely

Sky-high student accommodation in the heart of London has moved a step closer to becoming reality after council officials and construction chiefs reached a 'preconstruction' agreement for the proposed Nido Spitalfields project.

To be situated in Aldgate, right in the heart of the booming East End, the project will see the construction of a massive 33-storey high tower which will offer rented accommodation to around 1,200 students from any of the capital's educational institutions.

In addition to top-end accommodation, the tower will also boast shops, a gym and commercial office accommodation, which could provide part-time jobs for the students living there.

After years of neglect, the area around Aldgate is now one of the most vibrant in the entire city, with numerous trendy bars and clubs linking the bustling Spitalfields Market with the Indian cuisine centre of Brick Lane, including the Ten Bells pub, once the preferred establishment of several of Jack the Ripper's victims but now the haunt of arts students and young professionals taking advantage of the affordable rents and the opportunity to live close to the centre.
