South-east arts scene set for another boost |

| The already-strong artistic community in the south-east of England has been given a further boost by the news that the pier in the town of Hastings could be transformed into a new multi-million pound arts centre. For many years now, nearby Brighton has been a popular destination for students and professionals looking for a buzzing arts scene, one factor behind its consistently high levels of demand for rental accommodation. Now it looks as though Hastings could follow suit, with the local council giving its backing to proposals put forward by the Jerwood Foundation for a new gallery, which would house 20th and 21st century art. According to the body, the project could net the town £16 million, as it experiences the same increase in visitor number as was seen in St Ives when the Tate gallery was opened there. The Arts Council for the South East has also given its support to the initiative, which would further enhance the cultural reputation of the region and attract an increased number of renters. ![]() |
