Revolution in the east of Manchester |
13 2007 |
| Even as recently as a couple of years ago the Ancoats area of Manchester better known for its bleak, run-down warehouses than its stylish living spaces. This after all, with its smog and "ruinous houses", was one of the places which inspired Friedrich Engels to call for a worldwide workers' revolution with his good friend Karl Marx. However, now a revolution of a different kind is going on in the district as the mills have given way to penthouses and the gin-houses for chic, contemporary bars. The mass project of redevelopment has seen Ancoats designated a 50-acre conservation area, offering young professionals and students alike the opportunity to live in one of Manchester's most up-and-coming districts just a brief walk from the city centre. Not only has the Ashton Canal been cleaned up allowing for pleasant strolls into town but a £6.5 million health and leisure centre is due for completion later this year, which, added to the new public parks planned, make Ancoats a fine place to live in itself. ![]() |
