Residents fight Manchester 'Village' plans |

| Plans to build a massive new bus terminal in Manchester city centre have been opposed by residents who claim it will impact upon the village feel of the area. Over recent years, massive increases in levels of affordable rental accommodation has seen Manchester city centre become home to thousands of professionals who would otherwise have been forced to commute from the suburbs. Now, those living in and around the city's famous Gay Village have started a campaign against the new terminal, which they say will "dramatically alter Village life" as it is planned that up to 200 buses could leave per hour. Given the implications, opponents to the plans have called for more time to discuss the planning details and work out a way of retaining the spirit of city centre living while also meeting the growing demand for public transport. Councillor Pat Karney told the Manchester Evening News: "These are radical proposals and it's important that GMPTE get this right. The Village is a special place and we need to protect that. The devil will be in the detail and that's why we're calling for an extension to the consultation." Demand for city centre rental accommodation in Manchester is likely to boom over the next few years with the construction of the new Media City. ![]() |
