Renting now cheaper than commuting into London |

| Steadily declining rental prices and soaring rail fares now mean it can often be cheaper to be a Monday-to-Friday tenant in London than commute into the city for work. According to a new report in the Metro newspaper, renting a mid-week crash pad is no longer the preserve of high-flying City workers, but instead has become popular with ordinary workers tired of the daily commute in and looking to save a bit of money. While a small studio flat in zone two of the capital can now be rented for as little as £40 a week, a weekly rail ticket from Reading or Brighton can cost nearly twice as much, meaning estate agents are saying that they are doing a "brisk trade" in pieds-a-terre. Furthermore, some websites are even advertising studio flats in London's zone one for £80 a week, inclusive of all bills. In addition to the rising ticket prices, commuters are growing increasingly tired of overcrowded trains and regular delays to their journey, factors which are both likely to push demand for rental crash-pads higher still. ![]() |
