Renters to be boosted by Manchester tram expansion |

| The go-ahead is set to be given to plans to significantly expand Manchester's Metrolink tram system, news which is likely to be welcomed by those looking to rent a property in certain parts of the city. Once the government gives the green light to the plans, as is widely expected to happen in the next few days, work will commence immediately on extending the current network to Droylsden in the east, Rochdale in the north and Chorlton in the south. This means that those wanting to rent a flat or a house in the cheaper suburbs rather than one of the thousands of new city centre apartments, will be able to get in and out of the city quickly and efficiently. According to the officials behind the proposals, the initiative will boost Metrolink passenger numbers by up to 50 per cent, with ten million journeys a year likely to be made by 2012. Trams are expected to start serving Droylsedon as early as 2011, with the Rochdale line due to open a year later. At present, the Metrolink system allows those working in the city centre to benefit from the mass of rental accommodation in the surrounding areas, while regular bus links also serve Withington, Fallowfield and Didsbury, all hugely popular with both student and professional renters. ![]() |
