| The organisers of the 2012 London Olympic Games has announced that more than 600 sporting facilities across the UK will be used as training venues for athletes and teams ahead of the event. According to the London Organising Committee, the sites - many of which are near to rented accommodation across the country - will help overseas athletes "prepare well" ahead of the global event. A guide containing the locations will be published at this year's Olympic Games in Beijing, with Sebastian Coe, chairman of the committee, claiming the use of the venues is a "great opportunity" for UK towns to get involved. "The process we have been through shows a great spread of high quality facilities throughout the UK that can be used by elite level athletes," Sir Sebastian said. Tessa Jowell, Olympics minister, said the number of facilities that qualify for use shows the "strength and diversity" of the nation's sporting infrastructure. There are 1,606 days until the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, according to the Olympic movement's website. ![]() |
