Renter numbers up by 5 per cent since October

The number of people renting a property in the UK has risen by five per cent since October, newly-published statistics show.

According to the latest study undertaken by the finance website Moneysupermarket.com, this soaring demand is due to a number of factors.

These include the fact that lenders are getting tougher and therefore making it more difficult for would-be buyers to obtain a mortgage, while people are also being put off by high prices and general market uncertainty.

Despite this, the head of mortgage at the website, Louise Cuming, warned that the number of landlords entering into the buy-to-let sector is falling, meaning competition for rental accommodation could become even fiercer.

"In the past month alone there has been a 40 per cent drop in the number of buy to let mortgage products available, revealing Britain might be on the road to a housing disaster," she concluded.
