Rejuvenation plans being considered for London's historic Smithfield area |

| A public inquiry into the future of London's historic Smithfield's Market is to take place over the next two weeks. While the area around the market boasts a rich history, having played an important part in the capital's past, over recent years, it has suffered from neglect, prompting the MP Ruth Kelly along with English Heritage to look into what the future holds. The nearby Spitalfield's Market has benefited from substantial investment over the past few years and now boasts lively bars, good shopping and central but affordable rental accommodation, and it is hoped that the same can be achieved at Smithfield. Alongside the sites of the oldest hospital in England, several of the oldest churches in London and of the executions of several historical figures, including William Wallace, Smithfield is also home to a labyrinth of tunnels and basements as well as the underground River Fleet, making it a unique and atmospheric area in which to rent. Just recently it was announced that plans for a new 33-storey high tower offering sky-high student accommodation in the heart of the lively East End have been given the go-ahead, with work on the project to begin shortly. ![]() |
