Private landlords the focus of shake-up

Owning and letting a second home could become cheaper if the government introduces a shake-up of the regulations governing ownership, it has been suggested in an OffPlanPropertyExchange.com report.

The potential changes include alterations to the amount of stamp duty paid on second homes as well as an adaptation of the licensing system. They have been suggested in order to try to encourage landlords to purchase more homes and return confidence to the property market.

Housing minister Margaret Beckett was quoted by the website as saying: "The private rented sector plays a really important role in the housing market.

"Many of us have rented a house at some stage of our lives and it's crucial that we have a high quality sector that works well for both landlords and tenants, and encourages mobility."

Tenants should also benefit from the shake-up due to an increased amount of property available and potentially cheaper rents due to the increase in supply.
