Plans for south-east 'eco town' put forward |
04 2008 |
| Thousands of new homes could be built in the south-east of England as part of the government's 'eco-town' drive. Coming as tenant demand in the region and in particular around the city of Brighton hits near-record levels, plans for dozens of new environmentally-friendly communities across the UK have been unveiled. Among these is the proposed eco-town at a former airfield at Ford, close to Littlehampton and within easy commuting distance to both Brighton and London. According to housing minister Caroline Flint, who yesterday rejected more than 40 other eco-town proposals, the challenge of providing homes for people in Sussex who "desperately" needed them could only be solved by taking the initiative and starting construction before the problem becomes unmanageable. The planned new towns will be the first such developments in the UK since the 1960s - the decade which saw the construction of Milton Keynes and Stevenage - and form part of the government's aim of having three million new properties in place by 2010. ![]() |
