New statistics point to tenancy deposit success

Nearly nine out of ten tenants now get some or all of their deposits back after leaving a rental property, it has been revealed.

New figures released by the government-authorised insurance-based tenancy deposit protection scheme Mydeposits.co.uk show that, over the past 12 months some 200,000 individual deposits have been made safe under the initiative.

Of these, just 341 have been officially disputed when it comes to handing the deposit back to the tenants, while just 20 per cent of these cases in question had to be adjudicated through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

Furthermore, in 86 per cent of cases, the ADR found in favour of the tenant, while in just 11 per cent of cases landlords or letting agents were able to withhold the total deposit.

Commenting on the statistics, David Salusbury, chairman of mydeposits.co.uk, noted: "With so few disputes actually being notified and only 20 per cent of these requiring external adjudication, it seems that this kind of self-regulation is proving to be extremely effective.

"The risk to landlords of not complying with the legislation is considerable."ADNFCR-1219-ID-18531497-ADNFCR
