NALS urges landlords to prepare for EPCs

Landlords have today (June 24th) been warned to prepare for the upcoming deadline for the introduction of compulsory energy performance certificates (EPCs).

The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS) has issued the reminder about the October 1st cut-off point, as many landlords as still unaware of the regulations.

All social and private rented landlords in England and Wales will be legally required to produce an EPC when a new tenant arrives in their properties.

Caroline Pickering, chair of the NALS, has explained that the new laws will be mutually beneficial.

She said: "An EPC provides the tenant with a clear indication of the energy efficiency of their accommodation which can only be a selling point for prospective tenants.

"It is a 'win-win' situation for tenants, landlords and lettings agents."

She added: "Leaving your assessment until the last minute could cause unnecessary lengthy hold-ups, especially if everyone else does the same."

It is hoped that the new scheme will be able to reduce the proportion of the UK's carbon emissions currently attributed to domestic housing, which currently stands at 27 per cent.
