'Mr Manchester' to get street named after him |
05 2007 |
| Manchester's most famous music mogul Tony Wilson, who died in August after a long battle with cancer, is to have a street named after him in the heart of the city. Fittingly, the street lined up for the name change is Whitworth Street West, where the legendary nightclub the Hacienda was located. Now the street boasts hundreds of flats offering contemporary city-centre accommodation and two-thirds of residents will be required to give their approval to the scheme in order for it to go ahead. The names put forward so far by the record label chief's son and daughter are Tony Wilson Way, Anthony H Wilson Way and Wilson Street West. "We need two thirds of people to agree but I have gone round all the blocks and I am confident people will want to make history on that street," said Pat Karney, Manchester Council's city centre spokesman. If the initiative is given the green light, the council has confirmed that there will be a party for those living in the flats on the street to commemorate the man known as 'Mr Manchester'. ![]() |
