Mancunians free to sample Food and Drink Festival |

| Now in its 10th year, the Manchester Food and Drink Festival has started, with the best cuisine and booze from across the region being showcased at an open-air market in St Ann's Square. For the next fortnight a host of farmers and producers will be selling everything from organic meats, smoked cheeses and even chocolate, with celebrity chef Rick Stein among the 'food heroes' taking part. "Markets like this have become a lifeline for farmers, while also being a great tourist attraction," said Jane Hough from Knutsford-based Bexton Cheese. "There aren't any air-miles involved in transporting cheese from Knutsford to the centre of Manchester," she added. As well as being good news for farmers, the festival will also be welcomed by the city's students given the free samples of food and organic alcoholic drinks, including gins and fruit-based liqueurs. Failing that, nearby Oxford Road, popular with students looking for cheap accommodation in the heart of the city, also boasts a host of affordable eateries and pubs. ![]() |
