Manchester's gay scene continues to boom

Manchester's booming gay scene, which has seen the city compared with San Francisco, is a major draw for thousands of students each year, it has been revealed.

Coming two years after Manchester Metropolitan University was named the most gay-friendly educational institution in the country by Diva magazine, student officials have claimed that the scene is now stronger than ever.

As well as boasting the famous Gay Village surrounding Canal Street, made famous by the television drama Queer as Folk, Manchester's strong Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) university organisations are also proving popular with students moving to the city from elsewhere.

"I came to Manchester to be gay," third-year student Katy told the website student-direct.co.uk.

In addition, Manchester and the north-west of England was also recently named as one of the areas of the UK where it is cheaper to rent a property than to buy, with growing numbers of young professionals turning to the rental accommodation, both within the city centre and in the suburbs.
