Manchester's Games have left 'lasting legacy'

The Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in 2002 have left a lasting legacy in the city and has boosted interest in the area, it has been claimed.

Speaking to the BBC, local resident Barbara Taylor said that there had been massive changes in the area since the Games arrived in 2002 and the city as a whole appears to have undergone something of a rebirth.

Manchester is currently full of building initiatives and is seeing demand for rental property grow with more people seeing the city as a prosperous area to live and work.

"In the past, it was all heavy industry and most of the time the young men followed in their fathers' footsteps and went into the big firms. It was very dirty and very smelly," Ms Taylor explained.

She concluded: "Having the games here was a catalyst for the future. The money that is now coming into east Manchester is terrific."
