Manchester university improvement plans unveiled

Students in Manchester are set to benefit from environmentally-friendly lecture halls as well as affordable rental accommodation, new plans have revealed.

The new multi-million pound teaching centre, the plans for which have just been officially unveiled, will house a number of teaching rooms and lecture theatres as well as a host of social spaces, including shops and cafes.

Based on the bustling Oxford Road campus, the Manchester Metropolitan University building will use solar panels and ground source heat pumps to supply a large portion of its energy needs, while recycled rain water will be used for its plumbing system.

The new project will begin as the university also carries out improvements at its Didsbury campus, popular with students for its large number of top-end rental properties, lively nightlife and excellent transport links to the city centre.

Commenting on the £250 million scheme, Professor Huw Morris, dean of the university's business school, said: "Not only will this development look fantastic, it promises to be a very intelligent blend of leisure space and learning space which suits modern learners in a digital age."ADNFCR-1219-ID-18376674-ADNFCR
