Manchester universities increasing student funding |
17 2008 |
| Increasing numbers of postgraduate students could be attracted to Manchester after the city's universities announced they are to offer more funding. At present, the city is one of the most popular destinations for people moving away from home to study, thanks to its excellent academic reputation as well as its lively nightlife and affordable rental accommodation. However, it is set to become even more popular as educational institutions look to attract some of the country's best researchers with a number of new studentships and bursaries, according to a new report in the Independent. Most notably, Manchester Metropolitan University is currently busy "challenging the hegemony of the Russell Group" of institutions, offering increased funding for prospective students in the arts as well as the sciences. The University of Manchester, which was named UK University of the Year in 2006, has around 40,000 students, with more than 60,000 people applying for a place there every year. ![]() |
