Manchester tenants advised of gas safety measures

Tenants of rented properties across Manchester have been advised to check the safety of their gas appliances.

With 19 incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning seen over the past year alone in the north west of England, renters need to make sure that their boiler and other gas heating equipment are well-maintained, the Health and Safety Executive has stated.

The organisation's north-west regional director David Ashton, has advised: "If you are becoming a tenant of a rented property, ask your landlord for your gas safety certificate.

"He is required by law to show it to you so you know your gas appliances have been serviced annually."

Under the law, landlords of rented accommodation must ensure that gas appliances, flues and associated gas pipe work are maintained in a safe condition and compliant with the legal standards and also provide their tenants with a copy of the annual safety check within 28 days of them moving in.

However, it is the tenants' responsibility to maintain any gas appliance, such as a cooker or mobile heater, which they themselves own, Mr Ashton added. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18340839-ADNFCR
