Manchester suburb 'to be kept interesting' |

| The popular Manchester suburb of Chorlton looks set to keep its individual sense of character after the city council's planning commission threw out plans for a Tesco supermarket there. Over the past decade, Chorlton village has become increasingly popular with students and professionals working within creative industries due to its independent shops and lively musical scene, with the artist Badly Drawn Boy one famous resident. However, such character came under threat recently after the supermarket giant put forward plans to construct a store on the grounds of the Esso car park, though lobbying by locals and the Keep Chorlton Interesting campaign group ensured that the council declined to give the go-ahead to the proposals. "An expanded store would lead to a dangerous increase in traffic, increased risks for pedestrians and would threaten the independent shops," Debbie Ellen, a member of Keep Chorlton Interesting told the Manchester Evening News. In addition to offering more affordable rental accommodation than nearby Didsbury, Chorlton's enduring popularity is also due in part to its proximity to the city centre and dynamic nightlife. ![]() |
