Manchester students design trendy eco bag

A group of fashion students at the Manchester Metropolitan University who were asked by the city's glamorous Harvey Nichols store to come up with a new, environmentally friendly yet stylish bag for its food shoppers are to launch their work at the end of the month.

The move comes as retailers look to latch onto the booming 'eco-chic' movement, with Manchester also trying to lead the way and become the green capital of the UK.

Katy Jeanes and Jagruti Mistry came up with a 100 per cent cotton bag in two shades of green, which the store has agreed to exclusively stock and give to its customers along with information about the environmental impact of plastic bags.

The design has been called "lovely and simple, versatile and usable", by their lecturer, George Bouvier.

"Waste minimisation is the most important step we can take in reducing waste to landfill and the one legacy we do not want to leave future generations is a mountain of plastic bags," said Councillor Neil Swannick, the city council's executive member for the environment.

"This is a great way to raise awareness about such a serious problem and of course the challenge has now been set for other retailers to take this on board too."

Already, excellent bus and cycle facilities link the city's universities with the popular and affordable districts of Fallowfield and Withington, home to large numbers of students and young professionals.
