Manchester set to host 24-hour party

Manchester is to host one of the biggest parties the UK has ever seen in honour of the late music mogul Tony Wilson.

The 24-hour-long party will take place on June 21st, with venues around the city hosting their own concerts and parties.

A host of big names are expected to head to the city to pay their respects to the man who helped put Manchester on the world's musical map, partly through his establishment of the Hacienda nightclub.

Tim Booth of the band James, TV's Richard and Judy and Sir Alex Ferguson are all expected to take part in the festivities.

Tony's son Oli, who also works in the music industry, told the Manchester Evening News that he feels the party is a "great idea".

"Tony had a lot of influence on people when he was alive and that influence should continue down the line. The idea is to get people who worked with Tony to come and do talks and young people can meet these people and learn from them."

The Hacienda has now been transformed into contemporary apartments, giving music enthusiasts the chance to rent a place at the heart of Manchester's musical heritage.
