Manchester officially North's curry capital |
23 2007 |
| People renting in Manchester not only have some of the best nightspots and shopping in the country on their doorstep, but are also able to pop to the best curry house in the whole of the North after a night out. At the 2007 British Curry Awards, known as the 'curry Oscars', The Indian Ocean in the popular area of Ashton Under Lyne came out on top, beating off strong competition from hundreds of other hopefuls. Since 1993 the restaurant has been offering Mancunians a unique taste of the Indian sub-continent, with its specially-trained dozen top chefs working to recipes handed down from generation to generation. Among the celebrity curry fans to offer their congratulations to The Indian Ocean were TV presenter Chris Tarrant and Conservative leader David Cameron. "We are all delighted," said manager Forhad Jani. "We believe our service and food make us the best in the north-west and this is a wonderful achievement." Manchester has long been seen as the curry capital of the North, with a trip to the Indian restaurants of the popular student accommodation area of Rusholme an established late night tradition in the city. ![]() |
