Manchester fights for Byron bragging rights |

| Manchester University has entered into a tussle with the National Library of Scotland over the eighteenth century poet Lord Byron. Clinging onto the fact that Byron attained the title of 6th Baron of Rochdale, though he never lived in this area of Greater Manchester, the city's university recently announced plans to set up a "world-class" Byron Centre, highlighting his life and achievements. However, so far it looks like the new centre will be in no danger of ousting Manchester's thriving nightlife and excellent shopping as the number one attraction for thousands of students heading to the city each year. At present, the Byron Centre's collection includes a small handbag made by his childhood sweetheart Mary Chaworth, a bust made by a Greek sculptor and 30 years worth of notes made by an amateur researcher. According to the latest university guide from the Sunday Times, Manchester receives the largest number of applications from prospective students of any institution in the UK, due to a combination of its academic reputation, lively social scene and the affordable cost of living. ![]() |
