Manchester celebrates Black History Month

Manchester's cultural diversity is being celebrated through the city's Black History Month, with a number of events and parties exploring its rich heritage.

For the next few weeks, libraries across the city will examine Manchester's links with the transatlantic slave trade, the story of African heroes in the Second World War and the political involvement of black Mancunians in contemporary politics.

However, Black History Month is not just about lectures and exhibitions.

Numerous plays will be staged across the city to mark the contribution of people and African and Caribbean heritage to Manchester while some of the country's biggest reggae stars will be performing at venues in the Moss Side and Hulme areas.

Close to the city centre as well as to the Curry Mile and vibrant Withington, Moss Side offers not only affordable rental accommodation, but its Caribbean heritage gives it a unique vibrancy, with regular festivals being held in Alexandra Park, close to the old Maine Road football stadium.
