London's Polish community take to the polls |
23 2007 |
| London's Polish community made its voice heard over the past few days as thousands turned out to vote in their country's general election. A significant number of the 70,000 Poles who took an active part in the election despite living in the UK, currently reside in the capital, with many attracted to the affordable rents and excellent transport links of the west of the city, particularly areas such as Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush. Given the high ex-patriot population in the city, London boasts numerous Polish cafes and bars, all offering traditional fare and fostering a sense of community while also adding to the cosmopolitan nature of the capital. Since Poland joined the EU in 2004, the Polish community in London has boomed, with thousands choosing to share rental accommodation and take advantage of cheap flights and bus links back to their home country to regularly visit family and friends. London's Polish voters contributed to the country's Civic Platform Party election victory after leading politicians visited the city to campaign. ![]() |
