London student living plans given go-ahead

Plans for a new student accommodation development close to the centre of London have been given the green light by planning authorities.

Originally, the Oakmayne Plaza development was intended to include a hotel, office space and shops in addition to high-end rental apartments at the Elephant and Castle site.

Now however, the developers have chosen to scrap the offices and hotel in favour of student flats, meaning those studying in the capital will be given the chance to living affordably close to the centre of the city and a number of top educational institutions.

The 247-room student will face onto New Kent Road and already the developers have confirmed that they have received expressions of interest from a number of higher education establishments, including the London College of Communication and King's College London.

The news comes as demand for rental accommodation rises as student numbers grow across the UK.

According to the investment management group Assetz, demand for accommodation close to universities is so high that university campuses are failing to keep up, leading to a boom in private lettings. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18402415-ADNFCR
