London mayor promises more rental properties |

| Ken Livingstone has pledged to drive forward London's rental property sector should he triumph in the forthcoming Mayoral election. With demand for rental accommodation in the capital currently far outstripping supply, the British Property Federation (BPF) recently called for developers to be given greater incentives to construct homes to be rented out. Such calls for a "build-to-let" sector have also won the support of a number of other professional bodies and now it seems the mayor will give his backing to greater investment should he stay in office. Mr Livingstone's London housing manifesto, which was published this week, states: "A large and accessible private rented sector is essential to a successful world city and provides good housing options for many who seek flexibility and mobility in London's service-driven labour market." The director of the BPF, Ian Fletcher, welcomed the manifesto, adding that the greatest challenge was developing the east of the city to provide greater levels of affordable rental accommodation for professionals looking to commute into the centre. ![]() |
