London living 'not that expensive'

Despite the city's reputation, renting in London is not as expensive as many people fear, with the cost of rent compensated by a number of other factors, according to a new report.

Not only does the capital boast the highest gross salary and the highest level of disposable household income in the whole of the UK, but "supermarket shopping is among the cheapest [and] rent and mortgages do not take up as much of your annual income as they do in the south-east", the study carried out by the Independent concluded.

In addition, utility bills for those renting in London are also the cheapest in the country, representing just 1.2 per cent of annual salary.

Likewise, those living in the north-west of England, including Manchester, also benefit from a relatively low cost of living, in addition to good job opportunities and utility and supermarket bills in line with the national average, allowing them to save a good portion of their annual salaries.
