London cable car scheme unveiled by Mayor |
08 2008 |
| London mayor Boris Johnson is currently considering plans for an Alpine-style system of cable cars which would carry commuters across the River Thames, it has been reported. Under new plans drawn up by Lord Roger, the architectural advisor to Mr Johnson, the new cable cars would link the O2 arena in Greenwich with the business district of Canary Wharf, now increasingly popular with people looking to rent close to their place of work. The proposals come as planners look to solve the problems posed by a lack of river crossings east of the iconic Tower Bridge, with the issue becoming particularly acute as this part of the capital experiences rapid growth as it prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Mike Davies, senior director at Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, one of the companies behind the scheme, explained to the Times: "The great advantage of the cable car is that unlike a new road or rail link there are minimal planning headaches. "Imagine flying over the river from the Dome towards the skyscrapers in Canary Wharf. It would be the most fantastic ride." It is estimated that the cable cars would be capable of carrying 10,000 people an hour, with the trip taking just two minutes. ![]() |
