Landlord Association calls for rented sector improvements |
24 2008 |
| The Landlord Association has welcomed the government to consult it about improvements to the private rented sector, following the announcement of an official review. Launching the review, housing minister Yvette Cooper said that it would look at the impact of recent market growth and the increasing numbers of buy-to-let investors. Mr Woodman-Evans, membership director of The Landlord Association, said: "The news is promising for all concerned. It's definitely long overdue and any policy created as a result of the government review is sure to help the sector become more professional." He also enunciated his hope that the review would look at the protection in place for landlords as well as tenants, noting that the Landlord Association represents the interests of some 17,000 registered landlords. Mr Woodman-Evans explained that, while organisations such as Citizens Advice and Shelter protect the interests of tenants, research from the Landlords Association recently revealed that 40 per cent of landlords have had problems with their tenants, a large number of which relate to rental arrears. "We encourage all landlords to be diligent and fair to tenants but it's clear some more work is still to be done. Our main concern [however] is that landlords have no protection from 'bad' tenants" he said. ![]() |
