Johnny Marr is Salford's new music professor

The former Smiths guitarist and all-round Manchester legend Johnny Marr has been appointed visiting professor of music at Salford University.

With Martin Amis working down the road at Manchester University, the city's students will now be able to benefit from the experience of leading artists.

The 43-year old first played at Salford University with the Smiths back in 1986 and since achieving success with the Manchester band has gone on to record and perform with the likes of Electronic, Black Grape and Oasis as well as his current group, American indie-rockers Modest Mouse.

Commenting on his appointment, Marr told the Manchester Evening News: "Salford University is offering some fantastic opportunities to students in music.

"It is an honour to be appointed as a professor and I'm excited at the prospect of being able to make a contribution."

He will be passing on his extensive expertise to students taking the BA course in popular music and recording.

Manchester continues to be home to one of the UK's best music scenes which, along with great shopping in a rejuvenated city centre and cheap rental accommodation close to the city centre, is a major draw for prospective students from across the country. ADNFCR-1219-ID-18322284-ADNFCR
