Historic south-east home up for cheap rent |

| One of the most famous residencies in the south-east of England is up for rent, though prospective tenants will be required to take on a number of responsibilities. The former home of the American-born author Henry James, Lamb House in the town of Rye, East Sussex, comes with an annual rent of just £11,500. However, as well as having to keep the five-bedroom property in its present condition, tenants living there will also have to greet up to 7,000 visitors a year and answer any questions they may have, meaning a good knowledge of the author and his work is just as important as a steady income. "It is a bit like living in a museum," explained Sarah Philo, a literary enthusiast who has been living in Lamb House for the past two years with her boyfriend. "It's incredibly special," she told the Times. While living in the house, James wrote what many consider to be his finest works, The Wings of the Dove, The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl. Fellow author EF Benson also rented the property in the 1920s, adding to its literary credentials. ![]() |
