Govt not meeting housing targets

The government is failing to meet its targets on new housing, suggesting that it continues to make more sense to rent rather than buy.

According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), there is a real danger that the government's target of building three million new homes by 2020 will not be met.

It means that homes will remain expensive due to a shortage of available property.

With this in mind, many people will consider that it makes more sense to rent, at least until prices fall further.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the FMB, wants the government to take action by bringing unoccupied properties back to the market.

"The government has a target of 240,000 new homes every year and last year we built just under 170,000, so we're not even hitting the current target and with a downtown in the housing market we're not going to hit that target this year," he commented.

"We're not on course to build three million new homes [by 2020] and what the government should be thinking about is looking at empty homes in this country," added Mr Berry.ADNFCR-1219-ID-18579438-ADNFCR
